HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Christmas shoppers have more to fear this winter season than the mean old Grinch. The holidays are the busiest time for car burglars and present thieves.

Police say more officers will be on the lookout for crooks throughout the shopping season, but patrons are advised to be mindful of their surroundings and valuables.

Avoid carrying large sums of cashes, especially in large wallets that thieves can easily snatch from a handbag or back pocket. Police say thieves seek out patrons who are rearranging their shopping bags or hiding gift in car trunks.

Shoppers can become targets while walking to and away from their vehicle. Police say don't leave items in the car overnight or between stores.

Schedule store visits during daylight hours. If you must shop at night, park in an area that is well-lit with high traffic. Remember to lock your car and take your keys.

Try to leave the store with other shoppers. If you are unable to, ask an officer or security guard to escort you to your car.

If you're at the gas station, do not leave your car unlocked while pumping gas. Police say thieves can easily steal bags from back seats in a matter of seconds.

When visiting the bank or an ATM, be mindful of your surroundings before going back to the parking lot. Police say robbers have followed people from the bank to their next destination.

When at home, park your car in a garage. Police say it makes a big difference in protecting your car from burglary.

Don't give criminals access to your home. Take garage door openers inside, and never leave them in your vehicle.
