HPD fires at armed suspect at UPS facility in southeast Houston

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A shooter outside a UPS processing center in southeast Houston screamed "pay me my money" before firing his weapon several times, according to eyewitnesses.

Houston police officers have shut down part of Kirbyville Street as they investigate the shooting in the 7100 block of Mykawa at the UPS Customer Center.

Department spokesperson Victor Senties said Sgt. J Holcomb and Sgt A. Gonzaeles opened fire shortly after arriving to the center's parking lot.

Detectives told abc13 the armed man, when approached by officers, fired a shotgun. The sergeants returned fire. The armed man surrendered and was taken into custody.

UPS has released this statement to abc13:

UPS confirms an incident involving gunshots occurred this morning in the parking lot of a Houston-area building located at 7110 Mykawa Rd. No one was injured. The individual involved is a part-time UPS employee who was recently hired for a position working inside the facility. The employee was apprehended without incident. Drivers had already departed from the building, and other employees at the location were secured until police released the facility back to UPS to resume operations.

The safety and well-being of our employees is our top priority. UPS is cooperating with authorities as they continue an investigation.

Normal processing operations at the facility have resumed.
