HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Homicide investigators are trying to figure out what they can about a body discovered in a burning car in northwest Harris County Monday.

Investigators say the victim was found in the back seat, burned beyond recognition. They can't even determine a gender. Right now, it's not clear if the person died in the fire or if they were killed prior to it.

An eyewitness called in a report of a car on fire at about 11:45am. After fire crews extinguished it, they discovered the body.

"Kinda shocking," said Yesinia Sanchez, who lives nearby. "I mean, you never know what could happen in this neighborhood."

Sanchez often runs along the bayou. Her route takes her right past where the car was found.

The bayou separates the neighborhood, so it's surrounded by homes. Sanchez and others have lived in Woodfern Forest for some time. They, however, have never seen anything here quite like this.

Right now, detectives have found no one who saw the car driving into the area behind the homes.

Someone did tell detectives a man was seen running down the bayou, away from the car while it was on fire. At this point, however, they have no idea who that person was.
