Friends, family remember former MLB player Darryl Hamilton at funeral

PEARLAND, TX (KTRK) -- The mood was somber at Second Baptist Church as friends and family gathered Monday to remember Darryl Hamilton, a man to the public known best for his love of baseball. To loved ones, he was known best for infectious spirit.

"He's touched a lot of lives and will be greatly missed," family friend Eddie Kennison said.

Safe to say, 50-year-old Hamilton left a lasting impression on those whose path in life crossed his. Outside the former Major League Baseball player's funeral on Monday, you could see people funneling in.

The most telling was a group of young ball players decked out in full uniforms.

"He's got a big heart and he always believes in making sure the kids have a chance to be in MLB or any type of sports," family friend Donnie Kennison said.

Eight days ago, authorities says, Hamilton's girlfriend, Monica Jordan shot him dead inside their Pearland home before killing herself. Their 14-month child was inside the house at the time. The motive is still unclear.

"It gives you a sense of peace. It also kind of gives you a little angry of how everything happened and unfolded. Guy is 50 years old, with three kids -- it's not supposed to happen that way," Donnie Kennison said.

Hamilton spent 13 seasons in the majors, from 1988 to 2001 including seven with the Milwaukee Brewers. Afterwards, he made Houston home. He was known around town for his volunteer efforts. His friends say the one thing they'll remember most is his infectious smile.

"Darryl was one of those guys, no matter what he had a smile on his face. He always found a way to smile," Donnie Kennison said.

Hamilton leaves behind three children.
