CLEVELAND, TX (KTRK) -- Several college students on their way back to school are in the hospital after a head-on crash near Cleveland, Texas, last night.

It happened around 8:30pm in Montgomery County. Reports were coming in of a two-car collision on State Highway 105, just east of Goode City Road.

According to witnesses and officials, the driver of a pickup was eastbound on SH 105 when he crossed into the oncoming lane. A 2011 Hyundai Sonata the students were in was westbound on SE 105, when the driver saw the truck in his lane and tried to avoid it.

They struck on the right passenger side of the vehicles. The rear passenger door of the Hyundai was impaled into the right front of the 2002 Chevrolet pickup.

Three of the students in the Hyundai sonata were transported to area hospitals and are listed as stable, but two of the passengers were taken by Life Flight to Memorial Hermann Hospital

The students range in age from 22 to 24 years old. Those in worst shape were trapped in the vehicle for 30 minutes before being taken to the hospital.

The 25-year-old driver of the pickup, Ramon Polawco of Cleveland, was walking around when paramedics arrived. He was taken to the hospital and is said to be stable.

The two most serious patients, 22-year-old Akshay Jain and 24-year-old Ishan Bajaj, are still in very critical condition.
