Firefighters put out flames at a southwest Houston Apartment complex

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A fire destroyed one unit and damaged two others at the Kirkwood Vista Townhomes complex in southwest Houston.

Houston fire officials say the blaze broke out about 3:30am in a vacant unit of the complex off S. Kirkwood. The flames spread through the floor structure of the unit and reached two other townhomes causing significant smoke damage.

Residents report smelling smoke and were able to get out safely before firefighters arrived.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
