Experimental aircraft crashes in Brazoria County

BRAZORIA COUNTY, TX (KTRK) -- A pilot walked away from a crash that destroyed his helicopter with only minor injuries in Brazoria County.

Witnesses say the pilot was flying an experimental aircraft. It was a part of an event at a regional airport.

Witnesses noticed that the pilot wasn't in the air and went to check on him. They found the experimental chopper on its side, in the grass and smoke coming from the wreckage.

"He said that he had a vibration. He was up hovering pretty high. And he was going to come on down to see what was wrong but he just kept coming down. And I think he clipped a tree over here too on his way down," said eyewitness Dave Turner.

The pilot went to the hospital with back pain. The FAA is investigating the cause of the crash.
