Deputies: Man tried to kill toddler in wreck

CENTENNIAL, CO (KTRK) -- Sheriff's deputies in Colorado say a man involved in a violent crash admitted to trying to kill his son.

Officials say there are no tire marks and seemingly no attempt by the driver to slam on the brakes. Witnesses don't remember hearing any screeching before impact.

It was around 11am on Sunday when 29-year-old Nathan Weitzel barreled around a curb traveling at 65 to 75 miles per hour.

Weitzel slammed into a parked car, authorities say, then hit another before coming to a stop in a driveway.

Inside the mangled mess of twisted steel and broken glass was a 2-year-old boy.

Cinda Rosa frantically called 911, saying she could hear a child crying but couldn't see him. And then, she finally saw the top of the toddler's head.

"I...saw dad hitting it, like he was annoyed by the crying that was happening," Rosa says.

The Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office says Weitzel told investigators, "I was trying to kill my son."

His alleged motive, according to an affidavit, was that being a father was too big a responsibility and he didn't think he was man enough to raise a child.

Miraculously, little Isaiah survived in spite of not being buckled into a car seat.

The boy's mother says she is angry, but mostly thankful that he is still alive. Now he is recovering from a broken leg, a concussion, and a big cut to his forehead.

"He's such a strong boy and I thank God everyday that he's still alive," she says.
