Clements High School student dies after medical emergency during swim meet

FORT BEND COUNTY, TX (KTRK) -- Friends are remembering the Clements High School student athlete who tragically died Saturday morning after a swim meet.

A moment of silence was held during the Ridge Point and Dulles football game to honor the life of Brian Yuen. Those in the crowd were dressed in blue -- Yuen's favorite color.

"He was funny guy. Super humble, super sweet. Anything you asked of him, he would just smile and laugh and like yeah of course," Soham Dhar said.

During a swim meet at Don Cook Natatorium in Sugar Land, Yuen began to experience a medical emergency after the meet. Yuen was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.

"When it was happening, I don't think a lot of people knew. I think they wanted to keep it so nobody was like freaking out," Emily Miranda said. "When it did happen, it was very quiet and you could just really hear them crying."

Miranda is also a swimmer at Clements High School.

"As you were walking out, you saw a lot of people crying. It was really depressing. Like everybody knew him, he was a really really successful swimmer," Miranda said.

With less than a year before graduation, friends say they can't believe Yuen won't be joining them at college.

"Actually thinking about how he's not on this Earth anymore, I don't know," Dhar said. "It doesn't really comprehend in my life."

District crisis teams will be available for students and staff when classes resume Tuesday.

"The Fort Bend ISD family is heartbroken following the death of a Clements High School student athlete this morning. During a swim meet at the Don Cook Natatorium, a student began experiencing a medical emergency after competing in an event. FBISD staff immediately called 9-1-1 and provided assistance until paramedics arrived at the scene. Sadly, we learned the student passed away after being transported to a local hospital.

The loss of a child is an unimaginable tragedy, and our thoughts and prayers are with the student's family and friends during this extremely difficult time. District crisis teams will be at CHS and our other high schools when classes resume Tuesday. In the meantime, District staff are working closely with CHS administrators to provide immediate support to the student's fellow athletes.
