CHICAGO, IL -- A 12-year-old boy was charged with a felony after Chicago police said he brought an unloaded gun to Schmid Elementary in the 9700-block of South Greenwood.

The boy told police he brought the unloaded, 38-caliber blue steel revolver to school because he was being bullied by another student.

A security guard at the Pullman neighborhood school discovered the weapon in the boy's backpack around 11 a.m. Monday.

The boy was taken to the Calumet District police station, where he cited with a juvenile petition with unlawful use of a weapon. He was released to his parents. This is his first offense.

Police have not said how the boy obtained the gun. The case remains under investigation.

A police report said the boy has no gang affiliation.
