Body found off coast in San Leon

SAN LEON, TX (KTRK) -- Authorities say they've recovered a body off the coast in San Leon.

The body was found by a group of fishermen just east of Red Fish Island around 11:15am Thursday.

John Savedra says they were not sure at first what was floating in the water there, but as they approached to investigate it became clear the body was that of a man. He hopes the victim's family finds some comfort in this discovery.

"At least the family is going to have some closure. He was found and you know, the closure is what I was thankful for, that family's gonna know that hey, somebody found him," Savedra said.

He says he saw no signs of foul play. He and his friends waited with the body until authorities were able to meet them and retrieve it.

Officials aren't yet sure whether the victim is Danny Joseph Kenney, a 26-year-old man who went missing Wednesday morning while wade fishing in Dickinson Bay. Texas City Police say some of the physical characteristics of the missing fisherman match those of the body found today.

The body will be taken to the Galveston County Medical Examiner's Office for identification.
