Astros make it up to fan who wasn't allowed to bring cane into game

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- When the Houston Astros won Sunday, nobody was happier than George Mass.

"I'm a real fan," he told me with a smile.

The 59-year-old lost feeling in his left leg after a stroke a few years ago. Now, he takes a bus an hour each way just to get to the games.

This weekend, he brought his new cane, which folds out into a chair, so that he could rest on the way.

"Because I got to go a long way," he explained. "Especially to the bus stop."

His tickets to the game are in the disabled section, and he always brings a note from his doctor. So Mass thought his cane would be fine.

"They said I couldn't bring it in because it goes against Minute Maid policy," he said. "I showed them a letter from my doctor and they said that didn't tell them anything."

Mass was forced to leave his cane with security and limp around the ballpark.

On Monday, Astros officials apologized, saying the security guard misunderstood the rules and should've allowed the cane.

They promised Mass would never have this problem again, and even gave him four free tickets to the August 6 game.

"I feel good now," Mass said. "Maybe I can bring my girl to the game with me!"
