Officer involved shooting
Police were forced to shoot an armed man in the buttocks while responding to a welfare check

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- An officer-involved shooting in north Houston sent one man to the hospital late Wednesday night.

Police were called to a home in the 13300 block of Northborough Drive for a welfare check a little after 11:00pm. An armed man was reportedly beating on the door of who we've learned was his ex-girlfriend.

HPD says the officers had a description of the suspect. When they got to the building, they found him in the hallway.

We're told they gave some type of verbal commands. That's when HPD says he stepped back and reached to his side. One of the officers, fearing for his life according to HPD, fired his gun.

A bullet hit the suspect in the buttocks. When officers attempted to take him into custody, there was a struggle. They were able to apprehend him and get a weapon from him.

The suspect is in Ben Taub Hospital in stable condition. No word on his identity.

HPD identified the officer as L. Castillo, as six-year veteran on North Patrol.
