ALVIN, TX (KTRK) -- An Alvin High School football player was killed in a car crash Monday night, while coming back from a volleyball game.

Police say Zachary Juelich, 17, was ejected from his vehicle and died at FM 517 and SH 35 in Alvin.

His teammate and passenger, John Horton, 17, was taken to a hospital by helicopter.

"Parents aren't supposed to bury children, children are supposed to bury parents," said Alvin ISD Athletic Director, Michael Bass. "That's the same thing with coaches. We feel the same way."

Coaches and counselors are now meeting with students.

"We're not just here for this day. We'll be here for them for the rest of their lives," Bass said. "Anything we can do to help support them. They know this Alvin ISD family is here for them."

Both students were seniors and members of the football team. They were said to be well-known and well-liked.

The district's crisis response team is on campus today to provide counseling to students.
