How to get government checks during USPS service suspension
Residents in some areas where USPS service has been interrupted can pick up government-issued checks and medicine at the post office.

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Residents in some areas where USPS service has been interrupted can pick up their government-issued checks and medicine at the post office.

On its website, USPS has listed dozens of ZIP codes in areas where delivery is suspended. If your mailing address is in one of those ZIP codes, the postal service will hold government-issued checks (including Social Security Administration, Veterans Administration, Office of Personnel Management and Railroad Retirement board checks) and identifiable medication at the designated local post office for pickup.

Customers with a valid photo ID may pick up checks between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

If your ZIP code is not on the list, you will receive your checks and medication through normal delivery service.

USPS anticipates that it will begin restoring service to areas impacted by Hurricane Harvey as soon as Friday, Sept. 1.

If your home sustained damage and you anticipate that you will not be living here for an extended period of time, you can fill out a change of address request to temporarily redirect your mail.
