Apart from wife and kids, Houston evacuee talks ordeal to shelter

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- When the raining stops, there will be thousands upon thousands of harrowing evacuation stories in the Houston area.

Among one of them is Jose Rangel's journey to shelter and a reunion with his wife and kids.

As ABC13's Ted Oberg caught up with him, Rangel was coming off of a rescue vessel in the hopes that the next step would lead him to his family.

According to Rangel, he and his family evacuated from their home and took an airboat to C.E. King Middle School in northeast Houston. Coast Guard helicopters arrived to take women and children from the school, leaving Rangel behind.

Rangel had to wait at the school, where water began trickling in. Sheriff's deputies cleared out the place and took Rangel and other evacuees to Beltway 8 and Tidwell for a chance at another shuttle.

Early Tuesday, Oberg met up with Rangel as he was about to board the shuttle to George R. Brown Convention Center, where he said his wife and kids are seeking refuge.

"Judy, I'm out of the water and I'm coming home, baby," Rangel said to the camera, addressing his wife.
