Texans celebrate the Battle of San Jacinto

The day marks the anniversary of when General Sam Houston led the Texan army in a victory over General Santa Anna's Mexican army.

Today marks the 181st anniversary of the Battle of San Jacinto.

It was on this day in 1836 when General Sam Houston and the Texas army defeated the Mexican army. Mexican General Santa Anna was captured. In exchange for his freedom, he recognized Texas's independence.

A ceremony commemorating the battle was held at the San Jacinto Monument.

The largest battle re-enactment in the state is the centerpiece of the San Jacinto Day Festival held Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.on the grounds surrounding the San Jacinto Monument.
