HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Houston Public Media hosted community leaders to celebrate #50YearsNew of public broadcasting.

PBS President and CEO Paul Kerger was featured speaker.

Houston Public Media VP and General Manager Lisa Trapani Shumate talked about 2017 initiatives such as the launch of a 24/7 PBS Kids Channel dedicated to helping children who don't have access to early education.

KUHT first signed on the air in 1953 as the nation's first educational television station, and as one of the first member stations of National Educational Television, the precursor to PBS.

Houston Public Media is located on the UH main campus and includes KUHT TV8 (PBS), KUHF 88.7FM and other social media platforms.
