Upgrade your hot dog game for the Super Bowl

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Hot Dogs are a great Super Bowl staple, but it's doesn't have to be mustard and ketchup.

ABC13's Patricia Lopez stopped by Bernie's Burger Bus to get some quick, cheap and easy ways to take your dog up several notches.

Below are the recipes that Justin Turner cooked at Bernie's Burger Bus.

Recipes

Tipsy Onions

Ingredients:

2 Tbsp olive oil

1 large yellow onion, sliced

1/4 cup favorite whiskey

Salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

In a large skillet over medium, heat oil. Then add onions. Season with salt and pepper. Cook, stirring frequently, until the onions caramelize, about 15 to 20 minutes. Add whiskey and stir, scraping the browned bits on the bottom of the skillet with a wooden spoon. Cook until the whiskey is gone, about 5 to 10 minutes.

Chili Verde

Ingredients:

1/2 cup olive oil

1 onion, chopped

1 bell pepper, chopped

1 Tbsp cumin

1 tsp cayenne pepper

1 Tbsp granulated garlic

1 Tbsp Mexican oregano

2 Tbsp Masa

1/2 Tbsp Worcestershire

1 lb ground pork

3/4 cup salsa verde

1 cup chicken broth

Salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

In a large pot, saute chopped onion and bell pepper in olive oil on high heat for about 5 to 6 minutes until slightly translucent. When vegetables are soft, add spices, toast for one minute. Add pork and cook until browned properly. Add Masa and cook stirring for 2 minutes. Then add salsa verde and chicken broth. Bring to a boil and then turn down heat and simmer for 30 to 45 minutes until desired consistency.

Blue Cheese Coleslaw

Ingredients:

2 cups white cabbage, sliced

2 cups purple cabbage, sliced

1/2 cup red bell pepper, sliced

1/2 cup crumbled blue cheese

1 bunch chopped green onion

Dressing (recipe below)

Directions:

Mix all ingredients in a large bowl. Serve over hot dogs, hamburgers, sandwiches, or as a side dish.

Dressing for Blue Cheese Coleslaw

Ingredients:

2 Tbsp dijon mustard

2 Tbsp honey

3 pinches kosher salt

1/2 cup red wine vinegar

1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil

salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

Mix first four ingredients in a medium bowl. Slowly whisk in olive oil until emulsified. Add salt and pepper to taste.
