4-year-old accidentally shoots self, mother

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (KTRK) -- Authorities in Indianapolis are investigating a shooting that sent two to the hospital Sunday morning, according to WISH-TV.

Preliminary investigations determined a four-year-old child accidentally shot herself and her mother when she grabbed a gun from the nightstand. The girl was struck in the cheek. The bullet then hit her sleeping mother in the back of the head.

The shooting occurred in the 1600 block of East 44th Street just before 8:30 a.m.

The 4-year-old child was transported to Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health to treat her wounds and is listed as stable. The mother underwent surgery at IU Health Methodist Hospital.

Other children were at the residence at the time but were not harmed.

Detectives are investigating to determine what led up to the gunfire.
