PASADENA, TX (KTRK) -- A Pasadena Memorial High School freshman was knocked unconscious during a football game Thursday night in Pearland and was air-lifted to a Houston hospital, according to school officials.

The medical helicopter landed on the field in the middle of the game stunning spectators.

"I honestly thought he was dead," said Daniel Silva, who was watching from the stands.

School officials said the boy has regained consciousness and is expected to fully recover .

Art Del Barrio with Pasadena ISD said part of the reason for calling in the helicopter was to avoid traffic delays in getting the player treatment.

"If we are going to err, we are going to err on the side of caution," Silva said.

Classmates wore white Friday to show support for the victim who is expected to be able to return to school soon.
