W. Houston mass shooting victim in good spirits, still hospitalized
HOUSTON (KTRK) -- We're learning more about a victim from last month's deadly shooting rampage in west Houston.
Byron Wilson's family says he risked his life to try to take down the gunman, Dionisio Garza.
Byron had big dreams of giving back to the Spring Branch community before they were knocked off course by three bullets on Memorial Drive the day before Memorial Day. He's been at Ben Taub ever since, and will be there for at least another six to eight weeks.
Wilson's family shared this picture of him and his three year old son Ashton. They tell me he's in good spirits, but has a very long way to go. He was shot three times trying to stop Garza. His family tells us he was shot once in the right shoulder.
That shoulder is totally shattered and will need to be replaced. He was also shot once in each leg.
"It completely broke both his legs and shattered both of his shins, which is the biggest problem at hand because they just don't know when he'll be able to walk again," said his sister, Lauren Wilson. "A lot of people have kind of thrown out the word of, 'Oh it's gonna be two years.' We're being very optimistic and we're not putting a number on it."
His sister tells us they're also making sure he gets treatment so he doesn't develop PTSD.
There's a gofundme account set up to help Byron Wilson's family cover his medical bills, which they expect to be well into six figures.
