Girl, 5, accidentally kills self while father showers

LaPLACE, LA -- A 5-year-old Louisiana girl has lost her life after she accidentally shot herself.

Police say little Haley Moore was enjoying her Saturday when she stumbled upon her father's gun.

Her dad was in the shower, her older brother and sister elsewhere in the home. All were unaware that what happened next would shatter all of their lives forever.

"He got out of the shower and that's when he discovered his daughter had accidentally shot herself," Lt. Greg Baker says with the St. John the Baptist Sheriff's Department.

The bullet entered little Haley's chest and came out under her left arm, according to investigators. Her fragile little fingers were bruised from the slide, they said, likely from when she pulled the trigger.

The kids fled the house screaming in agony as paramedics rushed in to perform CPR.

Joy Ursin, the family's neighbor, says the children were distraught.

"The oldest kid, she repeatedly said, 'My sister shot herself, my sister shot herself, I don't know if she's gonna be okay," Ursin says.

The father told deputies he left the 45-caliber gun out on the table.

Lt. Baker says it is a lesson every parent needs to learn from in the aftermath of this tragic loss.

"Safety. Everything is safety," Lt. Baker says. "If you're an owner of a weapon, buy yourself a safe box. Or gun safe, you know."

Meantime, detectives are still investigating this horrific case amid overwhelming grief for all who loved this little girl.
