HOUSTON -- A SWAT team used tear gas to end a SWAT standoff in southeast Houston Thursday night.

It started in the 3600 block of Rosedale near the University of Houston a little before 8pm. Police say a 47-year-old man assaulted his wife earlier in the evening, damaged her car, and then ran into their home with a gun. He then reportedly barricaded himself inside threatening to take his own life.

Then at around 10:45pm, the SWAT team deployed tear gas and the suspect came out. He was taken to Memorial Hermann for observation.

Police say the man has an outstanding warrant for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. We're told alcohol may have been a factor in the situation because he was reportedly drinking throughout the day.

The suspect has not been identified.
