HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A Houston police officer was injured after he was struck by a vehicle during a police chase in east Houston.

It all happened around 4am at an apartment complex near Maxey Road near Woodforest Boulevard.

Police say officers noticed a white Nissan driving erratically and attempted to stop the vehicle. That is when officers say the driver hit the gas, leading police on a high-speed chase.

The chase ended at the apartment complex where officers say the driver and passengers of that vehicle acted like they were about to get out.

When officers exited their patrol car, the driver backed up, slamming into the patrol vehicle and hitting the officer.

The officer was taken to the hospital with an injury to his leg and hand. He is expected to be okay.

Police are searching for the suspects who fled the scene.
