ROSENBERG, TX (KTRK) -- First a fire.

Neighbor Wendy Gonzales said, "The whole street was lit up in smoke."

Then more bad news on Cotter Lane, a person died inside and police say it may not have been an accident.

Neighbor Calvin Kimble said, "It's just a sad day in the neighborhood."

Yellow tape surrounds the home today after firefighters were called to the scene last night.

A search of the home led them to a body. When police arrived on scene they say they found evidence at the home that makes them believe it's suspicious.

"This is a safe neighborhood. Twenty-one years this neighborhood has been here and nothing like this has happened before," said neighbor Wendy Gonzales. Calvin Kimble added, "You didn't see anything and you're right next door. That's the hurtin' and chilling part about it."

While police haven't released the victim's name, neighbors say they've seen a woman who lives alone come and go from the home.

Neighbor Celia Garcia said, "She was really to herself. A nice woman." Gonzales added, "I never met her, I don't know her and I regret that and I'm going to change that now for our neighbors. We have to be here for our neighbors period."

Investigators have gathered information from neighbors asking them what they may have seen yesterday before the fire. Garcia said, "We know there was someone there earlier in the day that someone seen around five o'clock in the backyard."

Tonight neighbors wait and vow to watch one another more closely. "I am hoping they get all the information they need and they bring this guy to justice because we can't be having stuff like this happening in our neighborhood," said Kimble.
