Rescue missions by Texas National Guard continue in Houston
HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- While it might seem the situation around Houston is more stable after Harvey, the Texas Army National Guard is on a mission to get flood victims the supplies they need.
A week ago, historic flooding began across the region, sending the Texas National Guard into high alert. Pilots, crews and rescue swimmers conducted high water rescues from the air last week.
This morning, crews from across Texas are helping to deliver the things people need to survive in Chambers and Liberty counties.
The National Guard took over a private airport in Brookshire, where they are preparing 8,000 pounds of supplies.
A warehouse nearby is filled with large boxes and pallets of supplies that have been donated. It's a full-scale military operation, with crews pulling, organizing and then loading deliveries onto huge helicopters.
Reporter Pooja Lodhia joined a crew from Austin in delivering the supplies to Chambers and Liberty counties.
Their transport is a helicopter brought down by the National Guard from the Dallas area, but it has a story of its own.
Crew members said the aircraft was used previously to deliver supplies in war-torn Afghanistan.
The helicopter can fly higher than normal aircraft, so it makes it ideal for rescue missions and supply runs, like the one Pooja experienced.
