HOUSTON (KTRK) -- We have learned that doctors at Texas Children's Hospital separated conjoined twins Hope and Faith Mata. It's a story we've been following since last year from the Medical Center.

On February 17, the little girls were officially separated in surgery. A team of doctors pulled off an intensive and risky surgery.

Pediatric Surgeon Dr. Darrell Cass says, "We had some challenges there that we had to work through."

Thirteen doctors spent 16 hours in the operating room. The doctors separated Hope and Faith's chest wall, lungs, lining of their heart, diaphragm, liver, intestines and pelvis. We sat down with the twin's mother last month and she shared her wish for her girls and her family.

Elysse Mata said, "I want them to have a shot at having a normal life. I'm looking forward of just going home and dressing them in tutus and bows and pink and purple and ribbon and I'm just excited."

The twins are resting at Texas Children's Hospital.
