Oreo unveils its newest flavor -- Red Velvet

The rumors are true -- Oreo is getting ready to debut a new flavor. Appropriately timed for release just before Valentine's Day, the newest cookie will be the Red Velvet Oreo.

"The brand decided on Red Velvet Oreo as its latest flavor as part of its ongoing mission to put its own twist on popular flavors," an Oreo spokesperson told ABC News.

The company spent 18 months perfecting the flavor for the red velvet cookie with cream cheese-flavored filling.

But does the cookie really have the red velvet flavor people know and love?

ABC News editors got an early taste and put the cookies to the test.

One photo editor, who claims to be a fan of "red velvet anything," says the look and smell were reminiscent of red velvet but the taste wasn't quite there.

Others agreed.

"I didn't notice a huge difference in the taste of the cookie compared to a normal Oreo," our health editor commented.

The one thing everyone seemed to agree on was a noticeable change in the creme filling.

"The filling was creamier and sweeter, but no taste of cream cheese," a reporter decided.

While one editor commented on a preservative after-taste, most said they wold eat more.

"All in all, I'd still get in touch with my inner fatty and polish off a package while watching Netflix, red velvet or not," one person summed up.

The new Red Velvet Oreo goes on sale Feb. 2, but cookie aficionados can enter to win an early taste.
