HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Americans are expected to spend $7.4 billion on their ghosts and goblins this year! A pretty frightening statistic if you ask me! The fact that the holiday falls on a Friday this year is no doubt pushing those numbers higher than they've been in the past decade. But don't be scared, there are several ways to get a costume without sending your pocket book to the grave!
1. Shop Resale - You can find ready-made costumes for under $10 or get creative and put your own look together. )Check out some of the neat costumes we put together at the Goodwill).
2. Make Your Own - it doesn't have to cost a lot, just a little creativity! Check out these ideas from crafter Adeina Anderson:
Witch Shoes
Tear off a strip of masking tape about 8 inches long. Stick it to the end of the inside of the top of the shoe and drag it down past the toe and let it hang there. Repeat this until you have about 6 pieces of tape on the front of the shoe. Gather the tape at the end of the shoe into a point and wrap the point with another piece of tape until it stays like the tip of a witch's shoe. Paint the masking tape black and let dry for about 30 minutes. In small sections, paint the decou page onto the whole shoe and pour black glitter on the shoe as you go. Let dry overnight. Cut a piece of cardboard into a square about 2"x2". Paint decou Page onto the outer edges of the cardboard and about " in, and then pour purple glitter onto the painted areas. Next paint decou page into the center of the square and cover with black glitter, let dry overnight. You could also put glitter onto a plastic spider for added decoration. Once everything is dry, using the hot glue gun, glue the cardboard square onto the front of the shoe and then glue the spider onto the square. Add the witch skirt and the witch hat for the full look.
Witch Skirt & Hat
For the skirt, keep the tulle doubled up, just how it came from the fabric store, and cut the tulle into strips about 2 inches thick. Take the strips and tie them to the ribbon by pulling the ends through the loop at the top of the doubled up tulle, (see picture). Repeat this step using one black and then one decorative black. Tie as many strips on as you will need to have the skirt wrap completely around your waist. Be sure to leave enough ribbon on each end so that you can tie the skirt.
For the hat, cut a large circle out of the poster board, about 18 - 24 inches. Then cut another circle inside the big circle to fit your head. Next, take a second piece of poster board and make a cone out of it, use the stapler to hold the cone together and then cover the edges with masking tape. Connect the cone to the inside circle with masking tape and paint the hat black, be sure to paint both sides of the flat piece of poster board, let it dry at least 30 minutes. Add some decorative glitter and spiders to match the shoes.
Using the same instructions as the witch skirt, you can also make a Queen of Hearts costume.
Queen of hearts
For the skirt, keep the tulle doubled up just how it came from the fabric store and cut each color into strips about 2 inches thick. Tie the strips to the ribbon by pulling the ends through the loop at the top of the doubled up tulle, (see picture). Repeat this step using 5 black, then 5 white and then 5 red. Tie as many strips on as you will need to have the skirt go completely around your waist. Be sure to leave enough ribbon on each end so that you can tie the skirt around your waist.
To decorate the skirt, cut hearts, spades, diamonds, and clubs out of the red and black felt about 4 inches big and then hot glue the shapes onto the tulle skirt. Cut the polk-a-dot ribbon long enough to tie around the top of the skirt and glue the red rose to the middle of the band.
Create the mask by gluing feathers and gems to a Paper Mache or plastic mask.
