Lead singer of The Cranberries arrested on New York City-to-Ireland flight

IRELAND -- The lead singer of Irish band The Cranberries was arrested on board an Aer Lingus flight from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City to Shannon Airport in Ireland after allegedly assaulting a flight attendant and headbutting a police officer who tried to arrest her.

Authorities say 43-year-old Dolores O'Riordan was removed from the plane by officers at Shannon Airport following the incident.

She is in Irish police custody and was taken to a local hospital.

Irish police released the following statement:

"Gardai at Shannon in Co Clare arrested a female in her early 40s following an incident on board an Aer Lingus flight from JFK in New York to Shannon. Gardai were called to meet the aircraft following an allegation on assault on an Aer Lingus female air hostess. The flight landed at approximately 5:30 a.m. this morning (10/11/14). A male member of An Garda Siochana was also assaulted (non serious injuries) during the course of the arrest. The Aer Lingus staff member has been taken to the Mid-Western Regional Hospital in Limerick to be treated for her injuries. The female in her 40s is currently detained at Shannon Garda Station under the provisions of Section 4 - Criminal Justice Act 1984. Gardai can confirm that the arrested person has been admitted to hospital."

Aer Lingus said in a statement, "An incident took place on board flight EI 110 en route from New York to Shannon today, Monday 10th November. The matter is being investigated by An Garda Siochana. As this is a security matter we will not comment any further."
