HOUSTON (KTRK) -- I'm not sure about a lot of things, but one thing I am sure of; Houston is in good hands.
In the past couple of weeks, thousands of Houston area students donned cap and gown and made that anxiously awaited walk across the stage to receive their diploma. And I feel like I've talked to at least half of them.
Over the past two weeks, I've spoken at a host of high schools and colleges and despite the daily dose of bad news about bad kids, I am here to tell you there is plenty of good.
In each setting, from Northwoods Catholic School to Klein Collins High School, from Lone Star College to the University of Houston, and a dozen others in between, I have discussed, debated, and demurred the events of the world. And I tell you, these kids are sharp.
They are knowledgeable. But even more than that, they are wise. A mind filled with knowledge doesn't go far without the wisdom to use it.
So, my congratulations to Houston graduates. The World is waiting! I have no doubt they will move forward with enthusiasm and motivation, dead set on creating their own footprint of influence, their personal legacy.
All of this reminds me of a quote from one of my favorite poets, authors and cartoonists, Dr. Seuss. Sure he is most widely known for children's books, but he was also brilliant and his poetry, sublime: "You have brains in your head, you have feet in your shoes. You steer yourself any direction you choose". ("Oh, The Places You'll Go")
So, make it happen! And closing with another quote from the same book: "And will you succeed?
Yes! You will, indeed! 98 and 3/4 percent guaranteed.
KID, YOU'LL MOVE MOUNTAINS!"
