Two dead after driver loses control of van along Gulf Freeway feeder

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Two people are dead following a crash along the Gulf Freeway Saturday.

The driver of a van traveling northbound on the Gulf Freeway feeder road apparently lost control and slammed into three cars stopped at the light at Edgebrook. Those vehicles were westbound, waiting to go under the freeway overpass.

"The driver of the minivan was traveling northbound on the service road," said HPD Sgt. Guillermo Lopez. "He lost control for an unknown reason, jumped the median and struck several vehicles that were parked at the light."

"I couldn't believe it. This was the first time I've been in a big accident like this. All of our windows were down and my mom just yelled to get down and close our eyes because of the flying glass," said Savannah Torres. "His tire flew in front of our truck. I couldn't believe it. The axel was still connected to it."

The cause of the accident is still under investigation, but several witnesses speculated that the driver may have suffered a medical condition.

The driver of the van died, as well as a young man who was driving a Ford truck, which was the first vehicle struck. Their identities have not been released.

The occupants of the other vehicles suffered minor injuries.
