HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Local bird lovers are upset at how United Airlines is killing birds at Bush Intercontinental Airport.

The Audubon society is concerned about the substance used to the kill birds at Bush airport this weekend. The society says more research is needed to determine what is in the poison because there are worries the birds died a slow, painful death.

"Human safety is paramount, it's primary. But inhumane treatment of birds and wildlife is not, not okay, so look at other alternatives that are out there," says Helen Drummond, Houston Audubon Society executive director.

United said it works with the Houston airport system to reduce health and safety risks posed by birds, which can bring down a plane. The airline hired a licensed contractor who complied with regulations.
