HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Firework sales will begin in Houston today, and there are a few things you should know before you buy.
The Houston Fire Department is reminding residents that fireworks are not only illegal within city limits, they can also be dangerous.
The city will continue to enforce regulations within the city. If you are caught discharging fireworks, you could face fines of up to $2,000 for each individual firework.
If you live in Harris County, remember that there are some places you cannot pop fireworks, for example near churches, hospitals, or schools without written authorization.
Officials with the Harris County Fire Marshal's Office are encouraging you and your family to consider a public firework event this year.
"Professional fireworks displays are a great way for citizens to safely enjoy fireworks," said Harris County Fire Marshal Mike Montgomery. "If you choose to use consumer fireworks, please read the cautionary labels and performance descriptions before igniting fireworks. Fireworks can be dangerous if not used properly."
