Humble HS brawls spark concern in community
There have been two fights within at a week at the high school, leaving concerned parents are looking for answers

HUMBLE, TX (KTRK) -- An Humble ISD police officer was injured after trying to break up a fight at Summer Creek High School on Friday. It was the second fight at the campus in one week.

"That's our nightly dinner conversation unfortunately," said Monica Scarbrough, mother of two teenage boys, who believes the fights at Summer Creek are out of control.

"I know there are fights in other schools, but not on a daily basis or even three or four times a week," added the boys' father, Kent.

The latest fight happened between two girls in the school cafeteria when, according to a school district spokesperson, 750 other students were around. An administrator tried to break up the fight, but got tossed aside.

"An officer is running to get over there and one of the girls involved in the fight is getting up ... and they collide," said Humble ISD spokesperson Jamie Mount.

"I was in the cafeteria a couple tables away," said 15-year-old Trey Scarbrough, explaining fights are commonplace at Summer Creek HS.

"It doesn't make me feel anything because it's just an everyday thing," said Trey. "The week before Thanksgiving break, we had nine fights."

On December 1, the school principal sent a letter home about a different fight, when one student was bruised after another threw punches. One was charged with assault.

"How does this affect their everyday learning?" questioned Trey's mom Monica Scarbrough. "How are they able to concentrate when things like that are going on in between classrooms or in the cafeteria?"

The Scarbroughs all agree that in the most recent case, the officer's actions were right on. But, they fear these fights could escalate and hurt innocent students or teachers.

"I just gotta make sure they're safe," said Kent Scarbrough of his boys.
