Free haircuts, school supplies handed out
Many hairdressers got students ready for first day of school and others received a bag full of school supplies

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Hundreds of thousands of local children head back to school and many people volunteered and gave kids free supplies and haircuts for the big day.

We can call it a back- to school make over. These students are less than 24 hours away from their first school bell of the year and they're heading back to class in style.

"We have stylist from all over Houston who came to give us a hand," said stylist Linda Pickney.

The free cuts and styles at Raimone's Salon aren't on the back-to-school list but for them it's important.

"Kids can be cruel so just to have them not have to worry about how they look and to literally be prepared for the year physically I think it's a boost for them," said Earker Coleman with Brashae Beauty Supply.

Donna Clarkson is getting eight kids ready for school.

"It's a gift from God," said Clarkson.

We went from the salon -- to the sanctuary.

"Asking God's blessings on really the entire city all the kids all the administrators," said Colin Taylor with Grace United Methodist Hospital.

At Grace United Methodist Church in the Heights there was another gift for students -- free back-packs.

"We've collected some backpacks to donate to some underprivileged children," Taylor said.

Grace United Methodist Church gave away more than a dozen free backpacks and school supplies and the stylist at Raimone's providing up to 110 cuts and styles today hoping to get the school year off to a good start.
