Wrong-way crash seriously injures man, child on North Loop

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A wrong-way crash seriously injured a man and a 10-year-old child overnight near the Houston Ship Channel.

Houston police say a truck slammed into four vehicles as it traveled north in the southbound lanes of I-45, between Crosstimbers and the 610 Loop.

Emergency vehicles rushed to the scene as calls came into 911. At the scene, officers found a small child and a man with serious injuries.

Both were rushed to Ben Taub Hospital, but are expected to survive.

Police say the man who caused the crash tried to run, but Harris County Precinct 1 Constables found him a short time later and took him into custody.

You can tell by the amount of damage just how serious this accident played out.

The driver is facing charges of hit and run, in addition to driving while intoxicated.

The accident highlights the dangers of impaired driving as we head into the holiday season.

On Sunday, a family of five was sent to the hospital, including three by Life Flight, after deputies say a suspected impaired driver hit them in a head-on collision in northwest Harris County.

"It's the holiday season, football season. We're seeing a lot of that in Harris County. If you're driving, don't drink, if you do have a drink get somebody to drive you," Harris County Sheriff's Office accident investigator M. Nguyen said.
