Authorities searching for human remains at Bacliff home in 'Texas Killing Fields' case: Warrant

Thursday, April 16, 2026
GALVESTON COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- Galveston County District Attorney Kenneth Cusick confirms the large police presence at the home of James Elmore Jr., who was recently charged in connection with the "Texas Killings Fields" murders, is a part of a search warrant execution.

ABC13's SkyEye was over the scene as law enforcement surrounded the home on 18th Street in Bacliff on Thursday morning.

"What you're seeing out (Thursday) morning is a result of an ongoing investigation," Cusick said during a brief press conference, adding that two search warrants were obtained in the case, but wouldn't say why.

Authorities said that in 2024, the Galveston County District Attorney's Office began reexamining evidence related to Clyde Hedrick, and a series of murders commonly identified with the "Killing Fields."

As the investigation continued, Elmore was arrested at the end of March 2026 and charged with manslaughter and tampering in connection with the 1984 murder of Laura Miller, as well as an additional tampering with evidence charge in the 1986 death of Audrey Lee Cook.

The cases drew national attention, as they centered near the intersection of Calder Road and Ervin Street in League City. Between 1984 and 1991, four women's bodies, including Miller and Cook, were found. The identities of the other two victims were Heidi Fye-Villareal and Donna Prudhomme.

Hedrick died in jail in March 2026, just before Elmore's arrest.

ABC13 obtained both warrants. One warrant states there's a belief that there could be bodies buried under the property, and the second warrant is for possession of child pornography.

According to the document, Tim Miller, the founder of Texas EquuSearch and father of one of the victims, told authorities that he spoke with Elmore in April 2025. He said that Elmore admitted to being present the night Tim's daughter, Laura Miller, was killed in September 1984. Elmore allegedly admitted to having prepared the vial of cocaine, containing a lethal dose, and that Hedrick was the one who administered it, the warrant states.

In addition, the warrant adds that Tim spoke to Elmore on the phone in March 2026 and that Elmore told him there was a body buried underneath the home on 18th Street that he acquired from Hedrick.

Documents state that Hedrick allegedly buried the bodies underneath where a structure had once been. Elmore allegedly said that Hedrick burned the property down and buried the victims, two unidentified women, underneath the rubble, according to the warrant.

During his arrest in connection with the "Killing Fields", a phone with the same number used to contact Tim was found on Elmore. A search warrant was obtained for that phone, and on April 13, 2026, police said they found images of child pornography, according to the search warrant.

Authorities said they were able to confirm that the images depicted children under the age of 18 engaging in sexual conduct, documents alleged, thus prompting a search warrant request for the home.

An investigation continues into the case.
