According to the Houston Police Department, officers responded to the shooting at Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center on Gessner Road at about 8:55 p.m.
Investigators said the 31-year-old man, who was experiencing a mental health crisis, was admitted to the hospital and taken to a secluded room in the back of the emergency room at around 6 p.m.
HPD said the man then presented a knife and refused to put it down, according to hospital security. Police said that at least three security guards tried to talk the patient into putting the knife down, but that he refused.
Guards said that when the patient became uncooperative, they used tasers on him to get the knife away from him, according to HPD. Authorities said that the suspect did go down after being shocked, but eventually got back up and reached for the knife again.
That's when, according to HPD, one of the guards shot the man multiple times in the torso. After being shot, the suspect immediately received medical treatment, but was later pronounced dead by doctors, officials said.
Authorities said the patient's identity is pending notification to family members by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
Investigators said they consulted with the Harris County District Attorney's Office and determined the shooting would be referred to a Harris County Grand Jury.
