HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Questions still linger about how a man reportedly ended up dead inside a trash can in the Third Ward. His body was found on Sunday in the parking lot of an apartment complex on Anita Street, according to the Houston Police Department.

HPD said the victim was 35-years-old and was found with a gunshot wound.

Still, they said they don't know who is involved.

It was a little after midnight on Sunday when HPD said officers arrived at the complex.

A caller reported shots fired and someone trying to put a body in a trash can, according to HPD.

However, police said that the caller was nowhere to be found when they arrived.

"The person that called us, blocked their number. We weren't able to call them back. So officers got there, and we didn't have anybody to talk to," HPD Lieutenant Willkens said.

At that point, HPD said officers started looking around the parking lot and found the body of a man in a trash can.

"We did find some trails of blood that led us to an apartment, and we were asking the individual to come out, which they refused," Lt. Willkens said.

ABC13 spoke with the property owner over the phone. He said no one was supposed to be in that unit and that anyone inside was squatting there.

Investigators said officers breached the door and took the person into custody.

"Some of our patrol support teams, our tactic guys, got out there and were able to use some breaching equipment to get him out," Lt. Willkens said. "So we are talking to him, and there is another individual we're talking to. Again, we don't have any suspects as of yet. They're just persons of interest we're talking to."

On Monday, law enforcement confirmed to ABC13 that those two people are not charged in this case.

HPD said they currently don't have a suspect in custody.
