HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- METRO has officially opened its police substation in Houston's East End area with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday.

Officials said the new substation along the Green Line will enhance "safety for riders at the Magnolia Park Transit Center and the surrounding area."

METRO added that the Harrisburg substation will help support 24/7 patrol presence and faster response times.

At the ceremony, Mayor John Whitmire and METRO Police Chief Ban Tien touted the agency's efforts to curb violence in the area.

Whitmire also added that more substations are to be installed across the city.
