According to law enforcement, shots were fired at about 8 p.m. at an apartment complex on 6650 Harbor Town Drive near Bellaire.
HPD Asst. Chief Luis Menendez Sierra said when officers arrived to the complex, they found a woman lying on the ground next to the apartment they were called to. She reportedly told officers she jumped to the ground from the second story trying to get away because one of her family members was inside shooting a gun.
She then told officers that other family members were still in the apartment with him, Sierra added.
HPD said they knocked on the door, only to be met with gunfire. HPD says they fired back, took cover, and called for SWAT. Police said that the suspect was not hit, and that no officers were injured.
"Upon arrival from SWAT, they were able to talk to the suspect inside, and he was able to turn himself in," Sierra said. "While we were waiting for SWAT, though, two of the females were rescued from the apartment - from the second-floor balcony - with the assistance of HFD and our police officers. We set up a ladder and were able to get them down from the second floor."
It's unclear exactly how many people were inside the apartment, but HPD says at least one child was there.
Sierra said the woman who jumped from the balcony was taken to the hospital with minor injuries and the 17-year-old suspect hurt his hand during the ordeal.
At last check, police were still working to talk with family members to get a better idea of what led up to the incident. It's unclear at this time what charges the 17-year-old suspect will face.
