HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Three women were shot and injured after dozens of shots rang out outside a southeast Houston convenience store, according to the Houston Police Department.

The incident happened around 10:40 p.m. on Tuesday near the corner of Scott Street and Mallow, according to HPD.

Arielle Kannady and Dwonna Tolbert said they were sitting outside their small business next to the convenience store when they were both shot. The women say they didn't see anyone but saw flashes from the guns.

"Before you know it, it's FA FA FA FA FA so we instantly duck, when we duck I grabbed her off the chain that's how she hurt her knee," Kannady said.

Investigators with HPD said they believe the suspect shot toward the store from a grassy area nearby.

"I was in shock, she kind of dragged me so she got hit and I was just trying t get away and I just crawled over there," Tolbert said.

A third woman in a car nearby was shot in the hand, HPD said.

The third victim reportedly drove away from the scene before stopping on Vera Street, where she called for help and officers found her. ABC13 stopped by the home and spoke to a woman who said she is the victim's landlord. The landlord said the third victim keeps to herself, was in the wrong place at the wrong time, and is recovering in the hospital.

The women were taken to the hospital and are expected to be OK, officials said.

HPD said a bullet hit the convenience store and struck a cooler in the back area, but no one else inside the store was hurt.

"The investigation is ongoing to figure out who in the heck did this, but they snuck up in here and shot quite a few rounds toward that store," Lt. Wilkens with HPD said.

HPD said the suspect shot at least 30 rounds from the nearby area.

Investigators said they are still working to identify a suspect and motive.

According to police, crime data this isn't the only violent crime that's happened here in the area. HPD data showing so far this year more than 20 violent crimes have happened within just a couple of blocks.

Investigators said they don't know who fired those 30 shots on Tuesday night or why. The women told Eyewitness News that they are grateful it didn't end differently.

"I could have been killed, and that's why I'm grateful," Kannady said.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is urged to contact the Houston Police Department or Crime Stoppers.
