"We passed a number of items, including the $12.5 million project for Chateau Forest. It's a drainage and paving project in District A. We're really excited about that to help mitigate flooding for our residents," Houston's District A Councilmember Amy Peck said. "That project is needed because we've had repetitive structural flooding in Chateau Forest and areas around Chateau Forest."
Peck said when the project is finished, it will reduce the impact of flooding for the District A neighborhood.
"When the project is done, it will help reduce the impact of flooding on the neighborhood, so we are taking that entire neighborhood and making sure that there are the correct-sized pipes so when rain comes, it's not getting inside people's homes," Councilmember Peck said.
The project will be paid for in part by appropriating $11,077,521.01 out of the Dedicated Drainage and Street Renewal Capital Fund and $1,494,942.59 out of the Water & Sewer System Consolidated Construction Fund, according to the City Council agenda.
Regarding the drainage project costs, Peck said they are well worth it.
"I think people generally want their tax dollars spent on infrastructure and drainage projects, especially ones that will help a lot of people to mitigate flooding," Peck told ABC13 in June.
The project will begin "right away," according to Peck, but it remains to be seen when it will be finished.
