'Reign of terror': HCSO arrests alleged serial rapist, says there could be more victims

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- The Harris County Sheriff's Office says there could be more victims tied to an accused serial rapist.

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said Carl Redfield Jr. was arrested while working at a car dealership last week, on July 24.

During a press conference Tuesday, authorities said his "reign of terror" may include multiple female victims. He is accused of at least three sexual assaults.

"We believe this may be just the tip of the iceberg," Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez said the case started with a woman coming forward.

"We have reason to believe Redfield has assaulted many more women, often times recording his attacks and attempting to intimidate his victims to keep them from coming forward," Gonzalez said.

The sheriff said Redfield Jr. was known to frequent bars in Harris County and use online dating apps.

He's also accused of manipulating multiple women and using a gun to control and exploit his victims.

The sheriff's office said they discovered Redfield also had hours of video footage of the assaults. An arrest warrant states he had home surveillance cameras installed inside his apartment.

"We will do everything in our power to get the information we need to bring everything to light in regards to what happened in this case," Angela Welton with the Harris County District Attorney's Office said.

Court records show Redfield does have a history of domestic violence cases in Harris County. He plead guilty to hitting a family member in 2015 but most cases against him were dismissed.

He was also convicted on a drug charge in LaPorte, Indiana, in 2005. Court records obtained by ABC13 shows Redfield was a jail detention officer when he was accused of accepting money to bring weed and cocaine into a jail but plead out, accepting a misdemeanor charge for possession of marijuana.

He is currently facing five charges with a bond set at more than $2.5 million.
