Shortly before midnight, Houston Police Department officers were called to the 6500 block of Dixie Drive for a drive-by shooting at the Bug's Bar.
Police said two people were killed and an additional fifteen others were injured after initially reporting five people were hurt.
"Everybody hit the ground. Everybody tumbled on top of each other and scattering all over the place and I just started running," Brielle Hunt said of the chaotic scene.
HPD said the victims who died were a 48-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman. Family identified the man as Paul "Junebug" Stevenson, a well-known barber and the bar's owner.
"Great man, father, uncle, cousin, brother," said one longtime friend. "He did a lot for the community in Third Ward."
HPD said the other 15 who were shot included eight males -- ages 52, 21, 19, 19 19, 18, 17, and 17 -- and seven females -- ages 21, 21,19, 18, 18, 18, and 14. They are all expected to be OK.
"Half of them self-transported to local hospitals, and some are on scene still," Assistant Chief Adrian Rodriguez said at the scene.
Officers weren't sure how many shots were fired but told ABC13 it was multiple rounds. Police said witnesses reported seeing unknown suspect(s) fire multiple rounds towards the crowd outside the nightclub from a black sedan. The vehicle reportedly drove off down Dixie Drive.
Just four months ago, there was another deadly shooting at this same bar. In that case, a 21-year-old man died after police say he got into an argument with a group of people who took off in a silver, four-door sedan. No arrests have been made.
Online state records show that the bar temporarily surrendered its liquor license, but it's not clear when and why.
The bar advertises on social media as "bring your own bottle" or BYOB but does not appear to follow the city's BYOB permit requirements, like signage at entrances and signage prohibiting alcohol consumption in the parking lot, where empty bottles sat Monday night, discarded.
An investigation into the latest shooting remains underway.
