The suspects, identified by police as Brian Smith and Hayan Lee, are each charged with aggravated sexual assault and trafficking of a person.
According to the Seguin Police Department, the 26-year-old woman accepted what she believed would be a short ride to her destination in Katy. Lt. Michael McCann said the woman did not know Smith or Lee but agreed to the ride because she needed transportation.
Investigators said the suspects drove past the woman's intended destination despite her requests to get out of the vehicle. Instead, they continued west on Interstate 10 toward Seguin, where police say the woman was sexually assaulted during the trip.
The vehicle eventually ran out of gas along Interstate 10 near Seguin early Wednesday morning, giving the woman an opportunity to escape, law enforcement said. Police said she fled the vehicle and sought help at a nearby home, where authorities were called at 12:45 a.m.
Authorities say officers responded and arrested Smith and Lee. The woman was found safe, according to police.
Court records show Smith has previous charges in Fort Bend County, including evading arrest, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and aggravated robbery.
McCann urged the public to use caution when accepting rides from people they do not know and encouraged residents to remain alert for signs that someone may be being trafficked or held against their will.
"Human trafficking can happen anywhere," McCann said, adding that tips from the public can help authorities identify victims and intervene.
Both suspects remain in custody in Guadalupe County on $1 million bonds. The investigation remains ongoing.
