2 Katy Freeway lanes near Downtown shut down as crews work to repair Houston Ave Bridge after strike

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Two inbound Katy Freeway lanes near Downtown are shut down on Saturday morning as crews work to repair damage from Friday night, according to TxDOT.

According to police, a truck hit the bridge at about 8:30 p.m. on Friday night. A container became dislodged and blocked a couple of right-hand lanes, officers said.

TxDOT said drivers should expect lanes to remain closed as repairs will take most of the day.

TxDOT's full statement:

I-10 eastbound at Houston Ave, two main lanes remain closed as crews gather equipment and materials to make needed bridge repairs following (a) heavy truck incident that occurred last night. Expect work to take most of the day, and lanes to remain closed. Seek alternate route.

It's not quite the Rodeo, but this kind of thing has turned into a Houston tradition. The bridge has been hit well over 70 times in the last year.

Records show eight of those crashes were so dangerous that they required police investigations.

The bridge clearance is 14 feet 3 inches.

There is an ongoing project to raise the elevation of I-10.

TxDOT says once completed, the Houston Avenue Bridge will sit below the I-10 main lanes, removing any future concerns of strikes on the Houston Avenue Bridge.
