Houston lifeguard shortage throwing a wrench in summer plans as city pools are unable to open

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- If you're planning to visit the Houston pools, you might have to rethink your plans as there is a minimal number of swimming pools that will be open due to a lifeguard shortage.

According to our partners at the Houston Chronicle, 12 of 37 aquatic centers are scheduled to open for the summer season. The pools are slated to be operating three days a week on a rotating basis.

The Parks and Recreation Department will be operating the opened pools.
The department will be offering a $150 signing bonus to new employees and an additional bonus of $150 for those who stay until Labor Day.

There is one challenge in recruiting lifeguards: hiring those who can meet the lifeguard requirements.



Those who have experience with lifeguarding can get paid up to $19 an hour.
